Visitors find it very convenient for travelling around ('cause it's near Penn Station and lot of subway lines). It's a cheap way to be near Times Square. It's like 10 blocks south of TS. It's not unsafe, just uninspired. The area around Grand Central is a bit nicer but it's a business area with lots of office buildings.
